About Copper Beeches

Ian has worked in Agriculture and Forestry since leaving school and is very much a practical person , he takes pride in his vegetable garden, despite the heavy clay soil, he built the hen and duck house himself.

As well as selling fire logs locally to residents in Petersfield and the surrounding area, he looks after the numerous animals we have.

We have acquired 6 Gloucester Old Spot weaners in April, which will be grown on. They are either kept here at Copper Beeches or on some land we own on Torberry Hill, any self catering guests are asked to contribute to their diet.   Torberry Farm is no longer a working farm, situated on the outskirts of Petersfield, we class Copper Beeches as a 'small holding'.

We have two Hereford Cross cows which we bucket fed a few years ago. These have been crossed with a Shetland bull. At the moment we have 9 in total, varying in age from a couple of moths up to 10 years old. These live on rented land or else graze on the South Downs for the Conservation Board or on our own land at North Marden.  We may buy more  Hereford/Guernsey calves which we will bucket feed at home again.

Our sheep are Rare Breed 'Dorset Down', at present we have eleven ewes and 12 lambs from last year. We shall be lambing this year during May.

We hope to rear our Norfolk Black turkeys again this year.  'Henny Penny’ is sitting on a clutch and ‘Hoppy Poppy’ is still laying. Eggs take 28 days to incubate and the resulting chicks should grow and be ready for Christmas.

Of course, we must not forget the various breeds of chicken and ducks which lay the free range eggs for the breakfast table.

Our Bed and Breakfast and Self Catering guests are welcome to visit our animals.  In fact we encourage our Self Catering guests to save any suitable waste for our pigs and poultry.

We married in 1971 and have two daughters, Tricia has two boys, Josh who is twelve and Toby is ten. They live local to Petersfield so we are able to see them quite often.  Debs has two girls, Stacey (12) and Neve (10), who also live locally at Midhurst.

Janet has had various jobs during her married life before becoming hostess for the Bed and Breakfast ( B & B / Guest House) in 2004. The first Self Catering Cottage 'The Dairy' became available for guest in 2005, and 'The Parlour' in 2006.

Janet derives great pleasure from looking after the various chickens, Indian Runner ducks and Campbell ducks as well as the turkeys.
Fresh chicken or duck eggs, when available, as well as the sausages and bacon from our home produced pork, freshly baked bread and homemade jams are all on offer for breakfast.

Oscar joined us at Copper Beeches at the end of April, 2010 as a puppy of 8 weeks.  We have had Weimaranas for over twenty years, our two previous dogs were rescued.  Oscar is seven years old, having had him as a puppy he is used to different people coming and going, he loves everyone and hopes everyone will love him too.  We have an indoor cage if need be, should  any guests be a little nervous about dogs. He thoroughly enjoys his walks on the South Downs, Petersfield Heath and surrounding areas, he is well behaved with the livestock and is the most endearing four legged friend we have had.  Oscar is our fifth Weimaraner.
